Twenty-Four

Ceci gave a deep belly laugh as she lay back on the hospital bed, munching a slice of toast and jam and watching kids’ TV. I tried not to pace as I waited for the doctor to come and see me and tell me what they’d found. She’d had an ECG, along with a blood test that she’d screamed blue murder about, and now I couldn’t seem to stop my imagination running wild, thinking of all the horrible possibilities that might lie before me. The smell of disinfectant and alcohol hand gel made it impossible to relax, to forget that I was in a hospital. It was so surreal to think that a few floors below the room where I waited now, my husband lay unresponsive in a coma. How terrifying to have two members of my family under this same roof, their futures so tenuous, so uncertain.

I glanced at Ceci now, trying to feel reassured by the colour in her cheeks, her eyes alert and sparkling as she stared at the small screen above her bed. Daisy had texted to say that she’d taken Rufus and Amelie home but that she hadn’t been able to find Tristan, despite searching for over an hour. She’d been on the verge of calling the police when I’d got a message from him saying he’d gone to see a friend and wouldn’t be back for dinner. And the only reason I could find for his apparent ambivalence was that despite years of being raised by the man, he still didn’t feel like Drew was his dad. Could it be possible that his loyalties lay with a man who had done nothing for him, nothing to earn his trust or respect?

I wished he’d been by my side when Ceci had collapsed. He knew the routines far better than Daisy – how to distract the others so I could focus on helping her, making sure they weren’t afraid – and he was surprisingly calm in a crisis. When we’d had a power cut during a storm a few days before Christmas last year, Amelie had been beside herself with terror, the sound of thunder rumbling ominously through the dark rooms of our home. Rufus, though he wouldn’t admit it, was scared too and kept asking for his daddy, who was stuck on the Underground, unable to get back to us. And Ceci had lost control completely, thrown by the unwelcome interruption to her evening. I was running between the three of them, attempting to stop Ceci from pulling her own hair out by the roots while trying and
